BORNEO TRAVEL INFORMATION

Flights Malaysia Airway Scheduled flights to Borneo depart from Heathrow and go via Kuala Lumpur. You arrive into KL the following morning. Daily flights run from KL to Tawau. All flight times are in local time. Stop overs in Kuala Lumpur are available (please ask for details). Check in is 3 hours before departure at the indicated terminal.

Flight tickets Will be sent to you by special delivery post (this will arrive with your normal post but will need to be singed for) unless otherwise stated. If you have not received your tickets within 5 days of travel then please call us.

Baggage allowance is 20 kg for hold baggage and 5 kg for hand baggage. It is recommended that all electrical goods (torches) and gauges (regulators) are taken in hand luggage. Dive knives go in the hold. Pony cylinders can be transported in hold luggage but must be shown to be empty and open.

Arrival in Borneo Your flight will arrive into Tawau where you will be met by one of our reps who will have a board with your name written down clearly to see.

Transfers Between airport and resort are in a car or mini bus. The journey from Tawau to Sempora takes around 1 hour. You then go by boat to Mabul – the journey is 45 mins by speedboat.

Clothes Towels are provided in the rooms but we recommend taking your own beach towel for after diving. Shorts and T-shirts and swim wear are the norm. We recommend warmer clothing for the evening when there may be a breeze. Remember sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are essential as the weather is nearly always sunny. Please dress modestly when on excursions in keeping with local Islamic law. Any form of nudity is not accepted in public places, including beaches.

Money Borneo currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (RM), however credit cards are widely accepted as well as travellers cheques. Weather good weather all year round with average temperatures 28 degrees humidity is always high and averages around 90%. Between the months of Oct-Feb is Sabah and Sarawak’s rainy season. Water Temp ranges from 26-30 degrees.

Insurance Please make sure you have insurance that covers travel arrangements and diving. We can provide holiday and diving cover from £55 per person. If you have your own insurance we will need details of your underwriter and an emergency contact.

Visas & Tax No Visa is required for a British passport holder staying for up to 2 months. Please note passports must be valid for at least 6 months on entering the country. There is an airport departure tax of 40 US$

Vaccinations You should refer to your GP or vaccination centre for the most up to date advise. We recommend Hep A, Typhoid, Polio and Tetanus. Malaria tablets are advised. Mefloquine (lariam) may affect your ability to dive safely.

Time Difference GMT + 8 hrs

Equipment Tanks and weights are the only equipment included in the cost of daily diving. It is possible to hire equipment from the dive centre but we advise you taking (when possible) your own mask, fins, snorkel, bcd, reg and computer or dive table. Diving in Malaysia usually follows a multi level dive profile, therefore square profiles are not appropriate. We advise that you carry your own delayed SMB’s (surface marker buoys). Rental torches are expensive and often not of a very high standard – we recommend that you purchase a small dive light for night dives. Water temp ranges from 26-28 degrees so choose your suit accordingly. There are charging facilities in the resort standard 220 volts. The sockets are continental 2 or 3 pin. Both A Clamp and DIN regulators can be used. Tanks are generally 10-12l aluminium.

Medicals & Certification Please bring with you your diving certification card and logbook , you will be asked to sign a liability waiver locally.
